Christian Clothing in Canada

Canada is a quietly Christian country. Not in the way that religion dominates public discourse or political life — it largely does not, and has not for some time — but in the sense that Christianity has shaped the country's institutions, its communities, and its character in ways that run deeper than current headlines suggest.

The Numbers

According to the 2021 Canadian census, 53.3 percent of Canadians — approximately 19.3 million people — identify as Christian. Catholics represent the largest single group at 29.9 percent of the population, followed by Protestant denominations including the United Church, Anglican Church, Baptists, and Pentecostals. Eastern Orthodox Christians and a wide range of other traditions make up the remainder.

It is worth noting that these numbers have declined significantly over the past two decades — from 77.1 percent in 2001 to 67.3 percent in 2011 to 53.3 percent in 2021. Canada is undergoing a genuine shift in its religious makeup. But 19 million Christians is still an enormous community, and one that remains active, engaged, and present in communities across the country.

Regional Character

Christianity in Canada looks different depending on where you are. Quebec's Catholic heritage is deep and complex — shaped by the Quiet Revolution of the 1960s, which transformed Quebec society and dramatically reduced the institutional power of the Church, while leaving behind a culture still marked by its Catholic roots.

The Prairie provinces — Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba — have some of the highest rates of evangelical Christian identification in the country. Churches here tend to be active, community-oriented, and rooted in denominations with long histories in the region.

British Columbia, particularly Greater Vancouver, has among the lowest rates of religious affiliation in Canada — but its Christian communities are often among the most intentional and engaged, precisely because faith here is chosen rather than assumed.

Canadian Christianity's Sensibility

Canadian Christianity, broadly speaking, tends toward a certain understatement. It is less politically vocal than its American counterpart, more focused on community service and quiet faithfulness than on public declaration.
