Chicago's relationship with Christianity is older than the city itself. Methodists built the first log cabin church on the banks of the Chicago River in 1831 — six years before Chicago was incorporated as a town. The Great Chicago Fire and the Churches That Stood

When the Great Chicago Fire swept through the city in October 1871, it destroyed roughly 17,450 buildings and left 100,000 people homeless. In the midst of that devastation, several churches became refuges for survivors. Old St. Patrick's Church — the oldest Catholic church in Chicago, still standing today — survived the fire entirely, and has served the city's Irish Catholic community for over 170 years.

D.L. Moody and the City's Evangelical Legacy

Few figures shaped American evangelical Christianity more profoundly than Dwight L. Moody, who built his ministry in Chicago in the years following the Civil War. Moody founded what is now Moody Bible Institute on the North Side — one of the most influential evangelical institutions in the world, which has trained ministers and missionaries for over 130 years. His revival meetings drew enormous crowds and helped establish Chicago as a center of Protestant energy in America.

Faith and Institution Building

Chicago's Methodist community was instrumental in founding Northwestern University in 1851 and Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in 1855. The city's Catholic archdiocese, established in 1843, grew rapidly through waves of Irish, German, Polish, and Italian immigration — building 22 territorial parishes within its first three decades.

The South Side and the Black Church

Quinn Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, established in 1844, is the oldest Black church in Chicago and one of the oldest in the Midwest. The South Side's Black church tradition has been a center of community, music, civil rights activism, and social service for generations — a legacy that continues today.
