Where American Pentecostalism Was Born

In 1906, a revival broke out on Azusa Street in downtown Los Angeles that changed the course of Christian history. Led by William J. Seymour, the Azusa Street Revival gave birth to the modern Pentecostal movement — a tradition that now counts over 600 million adherents worldwide. It happened in Los Angeles, in a former Methodist church building on a nondescript street, and its effects are still being felt more than a century later.

Angelus Temple and Aimee Semple McPherson

In 1923, evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson opened Angelus Temple near Echo Park — one of the first megachurches in American history. At its peak, services were conducted in five languages. During the Great Depression, McPherson's commissary fed an estimated 1.5 million people, serving more meals than the City of Los Angeles itself. She also pioneered religious radio broadcasting, with her signal reaching as far as Africa. Angelus Temple and the Foursquare Church she founded remain active today.

BIOLA and Evangelical Education

In 1908, oil magnate Lyman Stewart founded the Bible Institute of Los Angeles — known today as Biola University. It became one of the most significant centers of evangelical scholarship and ministry training in the country, and its influence on American Christianity has been substantial.

A City of Faith and Style

Los Angeles is also a fashion capital, and its Christian community reflects that.
