The Toronto Blessing

In January 1994, something unusual began happening at a small church near Toronto's Pearson International Airport — the Toronto Airport Vineyard, led by pastors John and Carol Arnott. What started as a series of revival meetings grew into one of the most discussed and debated spiritual events of the twentieth century. People came from across North America, then from Europe, then from around the world. The meetings ran nightly for years. The "Toronto Blessing," as it came to be called, spread to thousands of churches in hundreds of countries and left a lasting mark on global charismatic and evangelical Christianity.

The church — now known as Catch the Fire Toronto — continues to operate today, with services, a School of Ministry, and an ongoing influence on the international charismatic movement.

Toronto's Christian roots go back to its founding. St. James Cathedral, the oldest Anglican church in Toronto, was established in 1797. St. Michael's Cathedral has served the city's Catholic community since 1848. These historic congregations remain active today alongside newer, more contemporary churches.
